What Soul Taught Me About Life (and Success).
When I watched Soul, there was this one line that really stayed with me — a metaphor about the ocean and finding success, and honestly, it hit me right in the heart. 🥹 Do you know what that conversation really means? It’s like… we’re all constantly searching for the “meaning of life,” thinking that fulfillment is something out there, something big we have to chase. But sometimes, we forget to appreciate the good things already right in front of us. In the movie, it’s mirrored in Joe, who spends his whole life dreaming of becoming a famous jazz musician, convinced that once he achieves that, his life will finally be complete. But along the way, he overlooks how beautiful his life already is. And honestly? Don’t we all do that sometimes — chasing a dream so hard we forget to enjoy the present, missing the value of what we already have?
✨ And if you look at it from another angle, you could say Joe actually did succeed. He became a music teacher. He got to do what he loves. He played the jazz he’s so passionate about. And beyond that, he inspired his students. Sure, maybe his dream was to be a world-famous jazz performer — but even if he didn’t get there, he made a real difference. He inspired others. He helped shape lives. And that, in itself, is a pretty incredible kind of success.
But Joe doesn’t see it — he still wants something bigger, something more. All the while, he’s already swimming in the very ocean of success he’s been chasing; he just hasn’t realized it yet. And that’s what this conversation in Soul is quietly telling us: maybe the happiness or success we’re searching so hard for… is already all around us. 🐠🌊 Maybe we don’t need to run faster or reach farther. Maybe we just need to stop, take a breath, and look closely — and we’ll see that we’ve been swimming in our own ocean of success all along.
