Lilo & Stitch’s Sandwich Day and the Real Sandwich Origin

Believe it or not, Sandwich Day is a real thing — though it’s not every Thursday like in Lilo & Stitch. It goes all the way back to the 18th century, thanks to John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. He was known for loving card games so much that he could sit at the table for hours without moving.

One day, he got too hungry to keep playing, so he asked a servant to bring him meat and bread. He placed the meat between two slices of bread and continued playing while eating.
The idea was so practical that other card players started ordering “the same as Sandwich,” and the name stuck. The word Sandwich itself comes from the coastal town of Sandwich in England, derived from the Old English words sand + wic, meaning “a settlement on sandy soil.”
The dish became popular and eventually inspired National Sandwich Day, celebrated every year on November 3 — the Earl’s birthday. Some sandwich shops even offer small promotions like buy-one-get-one or sandwich + drink combos.

Even though this real-world Sandwich Day isn’t directly connected to the one in the animation, it’s still a fun bit of history. And somehow, knowing this makes my sandwich taste better every time.
